The Australian and New Zealand Federation of Chemical Engineers (ANZFChE) was formed in 1997 and has joint membership with the Institution of Chemical Engineers, Royal Australian Chemical Institute and Engineering New Zealand. Together, the Federation are involved in hosting several events and conferences throughout the year.

Firstly, the annual Chemeca conference brings together chemical engineers, process engineers and industrial chemists. Chemeca is held every year in a major Australian or New Zealand capital city. At each conference, the Federation awards the Chemical Engineering Awards of Excellence which includes the prestigious Chemeca Medal. The ANZFChE also plays a role in the Asia-Pacific Confederation of Chemical Engineers Congress (APCChE) which will this year be held in Australia in Sydney in 2027. Find out more about the APCChE congress.

Objectives of the joint operations

  • Demonstrate cooperative leadership for the profession of chemical engineering throughout Australia and New Zealand

  • Provide a forum for consultation and communication between the constituent institutions in the interests of the profession

  • Promote the profession of chemical engineering in Australia and New Zealand for the benefit of the community, the environment, industry and members

  • Develop joint position papers and approaches to issues of importance to chemical engineers

  • Promote an awareness of excellence throughout the profession

  • Encourage the building of careers in chemical engineering, including attracting new students to the profession, and the maintenance of professional standards via the institutions
